It seems like school just started a few weeks ago, but believe it or not, the holidays are fast approaching. Before you know it, your kids will be at home for Thanksgiving break and you’ll be searching for ways to keep them occupied while you’re busy preparing your annual feast. At the Imagine Nation Learning Center, the Top Rated Local® preschool in Union, we want to help. We’ve put together a list of ideas to help you keep your kids entertained while you focus on baking the perfect pumpkin pie.
Sometimes, all it takes to entertain your kids for hours on end is a new coloring book and a box of crayons. Head down to your local dollar store and stock up on several new books just for the occasion. Let the new coloring books be a surprise for them! Once they finish a page they’re particularly proud of, help them find a place to hang it up.
Let Them Decorate
This one might take a bit of prep work, but it’s a fun activity, nonetheless. If your helpers are on the younger side, cut bits of colored construction paper into fall shapes. Cut out leaves, pumpkins, and other seasonal shapes and place them in a small shoebox to keep them tidy. Then, lay out larger pieces of construction paper. Your kids can use the seasonal shapes to create collages, with the help of a glue stick! If your children are a bit older, or you’re comfortable letting them work with scissors, let them cut out the shapes themselves. Once they’ve finished their collages, help them hang their decorations up.
Even young kids can help out in the kitchen and each task can turn into a learning experience. Whether you’re making biscuits, breaking up stale bread for stuffing, or need to cut out cookies, get your kids involved. They’ll love getting their hands dirty and playing with bread dough is a great way to get them involved in the meal preparation process without any of the safety hazards of actual cooking. Let them knead and roll the dough until you’re ready to start molding the biscuits. Once you’re ready, show them how to cut them out with a water glass. They’ll happily handle the rest!
Give them a Job
Kids love to be involved, even if that means helping you with the chores. Get your kids to help you set the table, put away dishes, unload the groceries, and anything else that keeps them busy and moving. With leaves falling all around the yard, ask them to help you rake them up! You may even want to let them jump in the pile at the end. After all, what’s more fun than leaping into a large pile of crunchy leaves on a perfect autumn day?
The key to keeping your kids happy over the holidays is to give them plenty of things to do. We hope these ideas give you a head start on planning activities for the upcoming Thanksgiving break. For more information on our preschool in Union, contact Imagine Nation Learning Center today.
